NEW for 2026 - Practical Workshops in the Masterclass Theatre on Friday 22 May

On Trade & Preview Day Calcutt Boats Training invites you to take part in an engaging, hands-on training experience at this year’s Crick Boat Show. Delivered in collaboration with trainers from the IWA Sustainable Boating Group, Calcutt’s instructors will run a series of three practical workshops in the Masterclass Theatre throughout the day. You may book individual sessions or attend all three for a broader learning experience. Each session will be for a maximum of 8 people and will cost £15.00 per person.

Developed in partnership with Waterways World, these workshops are designed to highlight the value of training for all inland waterways users. They provide a practical introduction to key skills and aim to guide you towards further development opportunities, whether certificated or informal, including courses offered by organisations such as the RYA and IWA.

Diesel Engine Introduction

This introductory session, based on the RYA Diesel Engine Maintenance course, offers a clear and practical overview of how a typical canal boat diesel engine operates. It covers key components, essential routine checks, and common faults, helping boaters build confidence, understand their engine, and adopt good maintenance practices.

Boaters’ First Aid

This session explores the specific challenges of dealing with medical incidents aboard a narrowboat. It considers the realities of working in confined spaces with limited immediate access to emergency services, and emphasises the importance of preparation. Participants will also have the opportunity to refresh CPR skills in a boating context.

Propulsion & Power

As inland boating begins to move beyond traditional diesel propulsion, this session examines emerging technologies and more sustainable options. It introduces lithium battery systems, including safe charging practices and key temperature considerations, alongside the potential of electric propulsion. The session also explores Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) as a lower-carbon alternative to mineral diesel, and provides practical guidance on fuel comparison and safe spill management.
